The Italian former GP star clawed his way back from a bad start which saw him drop to ninth in the opening lap to take the victory this afternoon.
But it was a tough opening race for the British contingent, with no UK riders finishing on the podium and both Eugene Laverty and Tom Sykes lucky to walk away from big crashes.

And it was a great first race for rookie Eugene Laverty, who led the first lap of his first ever World Superbike race, and then beat team-mate Marco Melandri over the line to take fourth.

After dominating every single session since the World Superbike circus rocked up to the Australian circuit last week, the Spaniard made it look easy as he snuck out and grabbed the top spot with a blistering lap time of 1.30:882mins.
It has been the same story throughout the weekend, with the Althea Racing Ducati rider ending every session on top, and it was clear from the offset that it was going to be business as usual today.
