But it was Max Biaggi who stole the show by finishing second after working his way back through the pack from dead last after a running off the track in the first lap.

And Brit Tom Sykes took a hard-fought third after seeing-off Jonathan Rea's Honda over the line.

checa2 - 300px.jpgCARLOS Checa was back to his best as he took the win in the second World Superbike Championship race at Assen.

The championship leader extended his points tally after beating reigning champ Max Biaggi across the line at the end of the 22-lap race.

Third man home was Race One winner Jonathan Rea, closely follwed by Biaggi's Alitalia team-mate Leon Camier.

CARLOS Checa took a clean sweep at Phillip Island after cruising to victory in Race Two.

The Spaniard gave a masterclass demonstration of racing after taking his second easy win of the day following a dominant weekend.

Max Biaggi once again finished second, while Marco Melandri took his first visit to the World Superbike podium with a very close third.

CARLOS Checa took first blood with an easy victory in the opening World Superbike Championship race of the season at Phillip Island.

After dominating every session since the weekend began, the Althea Racing Ducati rider led reigning champion Max Biaggi over the line, with Leon Haslam surviving a race-long battle to grab the third place.

And it was a great first race for rookie Eugene Laverty, who led the first lap of his first ever World Superbike race, and then beat team-mate Marco Melandri over the line to take fourth.
