Last Thursday night I had to make a decision as I had double booked - should I go to my monthly Book Club Meeting (for which I have to admit I hadn't read the prescribed book) or the Live Theatre Writers Group?

The National Glass Centre

Apologies if this blog is turning into a social column. I know it’s supposed to be about everyday life but I’ve been to some really good events lately and a retirement party last Sunday evening at the National Glass Centre in Sunderland was no exception…

The Great British Barbeque

Our family’s summer mission statement used to be - barbeque with the neighbours and sit out in the garden until the sun comes up…

Finding a New Dentist

They say things happen in cycles… The other day I was involved in a car accident and my brand new dishwasher went up in smoke. To try to avoid the third catastrophe someone at work told me to break a match. I couldn’t find one so I attempted to break a pencil and broke a tooth instead…Which led to the discovery that our dentist is retiring after thirty two years…

Son No. 2 has been home from Uni for the weekend. With a big blue plastic Ikea bag full of washing and some even bigger news…

Parents Evening

Last year we had the P.R.D. Personal Review Dialogue. Instead of the traditional evening format, a meeting was set up between parents, child and one allocated teacher during the day for approximately twenty minutes.
This year, when I am handed a letter with tear off slip from the school for me to sign and return (a day before the event I might add) I see we are back to the old system of queuing to see ten teachers…

The Book Group

The Book Group I belong to is a group with a difference.
When we met to review Zorba the Greek we had a full scale Greek evening with traditional Moussaka, Greek salad and Ouzo me Meze. We forgot about the Greek background music, however, someone did bring along the Grease soundtrack instead...
When we reviewed Peter Kay's book, The Sound of Laughter, we pretended we were at The Phoenix Club and had a pub quiz complete with twiglets, peanuts and sausage rolls.

Chunky Funky

Having had curly hair all my life, I wasn’t too sure when Son No. 2 wanted to straighten it. ‘No-one has big hair any more.’ he insisted.
I was instructed to sit still on his bed amongst the detritus of unfinished homework, music sheets and empty crisp packets without tidying up (which was difficult) whilst he powered up his brand new digital hair straighteners.

Goth attack
Posted by Arlene Pearson on March 11, 2008 5:48 PM
I was walking past Grey’s Monument in Newcastle the other evening on the way to my Book Group meeting when my mobile rang. It was Son No. 2 (aged 15) who announced: ‘I’ve just been attacked.’
When I’d sufficiently recovered from the shock, he told me he’d been walking back from school along the tiny street of shops ten minutes away from home. It was half past five in the evening when four youths pulled him into a dark alleyway between two shops. It’s normally a busy street but all the shops were closed and no one else was about.
