Johnny's a Rea of sunshine at Brno
Superbike World Championship, Brno Race One...By Zoe Burn and Mic Archbold.
JONATHAN Rea dominated the opening race from Brno this morning, to take his third SBK win of the season.
The HANNSpree Ten Kate rider crossed the line on one wheel after edging out a gap of more than three seconds at the front of the pack.
Series leader Max Biaggi was second man home, with Britain's Cal Crutchlow third.
In the hot Czech Republic sunshine, it was Biaggi's Alitalia Aprilia which got the best start, launching into the lead from second on the grid to lead the pack into the first corner.
Rea, who had started from third was equally fast, tucking into second ahead of polesitter Crutchlow.
A big crash further back a corner later saw Chris Vermeulen, Jakub Smrz and Max Neukirchner suffer a huge coming-together, while up front Rea was closing in on Biaggi.
Towards the end of the opening lap, Rea made the move around the outside of the Roman Emperor, taking a lead which was never to come under any threat.
A lap later, Biaggi fell to the clutches of Crutchlow's Yamaha Sterilgarda, with the Brit storming past the diminutive Italian.
From there it looked like it was to be an all-Brit battle between Rea and Crutchlow, as Biaggi appeared to go backwards, and soon came under fire from the BMW of Ruben Xaus.
The lanky Spaniard made the move on lap four, and it seemed that Biaggi was struggling until he took the place back two laps later - seconds after his team-mate Leon Camier retired his Aprilia to the pits.
Up front, Rea kept himself ahead of Crutchlow, and slowly began to eke out a lead, which was to steadily grow as the race wore on.
The order remained the same for several laps until it became clear that Cal looked to be struggling for grip, as Rea moved further ahead into the distance while Biaggi began to loom ever closer.
On Lap 16 Biaggi made a move past Crutchlow but ran wide, allowing the Brit to sneak straight back through before trying exactly the same manoevre on the following lap, this time making it stick.
But Cal wasn't done, and shoved his Yamaha straight back up the inside of the Aprilia but was unable to hold it off, Biaggi searing straight back underneath him.
From there Biaggi pulled out a bit of a gap on Crutchlow, but with just two laps remaining was never going to be in a position to challenge Rea, who took the chequered flag much to the delight of the Ten Kate team.
Brit Leon Haslam who had been leading the championship in the earlier part of the season, clearly struggled through the race, riding a solid ride which saw his Suzuki Alstare cross the line eighth.
Crutchlow's team-mate James Toseland finished just ahead of him in seventh.
The result means Biaggi now leads the championship on 327 points, ahead of Haslam on 278 and Rea on 183.
