Working with the next generation of designers
As part of their course I recently made a presentation to 3D design students at Newcastle College about the part played by designers in producing sustainable products.
Premier Waste Management is challenging the students to design sustainable products, or items that solve recycling problems, or promote recycling, in a competition to determine which designs are best for the environment and will protect the planet in the future.
Students have eight weeks to research and prepare their final idea, before they present it to Premier Waste Management and obtain industry advice on potential packaging and end users, as well as marketing the finished product.
The design project will culminate in early December with a public exhibition of the students' creations.
Educating designers at the very start of their career about sustainability is a vital part of ensuring that the products, structures and buildings they create are sustainable. Premier Waste Management is committed to raising awareness of key environmental issues that affect us all, and we hope that this project will encourage students to look at everyday items in a different light by realising their design and recyclable potential.
