Biaggi and Spies take wins at Brno

By Burning Rubber on Jul 26, 09 09:53 PM

Biaggi-don-blog.jpgMAX Biaggi and Ben Spies shared the spoils in a tension-filled two races of the FIM World Superbike Championship at Brno.

Biaggi emerged victor after a dramatic Race One which saw Spies taken out by the Ducati Xerox machine of Michel Fabrizio, but the cool-headed Texan bounced back to take the win in the second.

Meanwhile a still sore Noriyuki Haga kept his championship hopes alive by grabbing an eighth and a sixth.

Biaggi's win was his first since Vallelunga in 2007 but more historically, Aprilia's first win since 2001.

The Roman Emperor had been lying third behind Spies and Fabrizio, who was looking menacing behind the Texan's Yamaha.

And on Lap Five, Fabrizio tried to make a move on the inside of a fast left-hander and crashed out, taking Spies with him.Biaggi Donington 09.jpg

This left Biaggi with a clear track and a lonely race to the chequered flag, and he crossed the line comfortably ahead of the HANNSpree Ten Kate duo of Carlos Checa and Jonny Rea.

And it was a mixed bag for BMW, who suffered the lows of seeing Ruben Xaus suffer a huge highside in the opening lap which left him with a fractured femur bone, while team-mate Troy Corser enjoyed their best finish in fifth - after leading the first two laps.

After riding a defensive race, Haga finished eighth.

"It's great! What can I say!" said a thrilled and emotional Biaggi. "When I crossed the start-finish I was so happy to be winning this race and I had so many flashbacks of Brno, I can feel that it is one of my favourite circuits.

"Of course I don't want to take anything away from Spies and Fabrizio, they were both very fast, but I remember Barry Sheene used to say 'To finish first, first you have to finish' and this is a part of the deal."

Spies - wsb-donington - small.jpgRace two was less eventful, but equally tense, mainly down to Biaggi, who stalked Fabrizio from third for most of the 20-lap race.

On Lap 15 he made the move, and set about to catch Spies who had led since the first lap.

It took just two laps for the Italian to attach himself to the back of the Yamaha rider, but despite his best efforts, Biaggi was unable to make a pass, leaving Spies to take the win.

"It was a tough race, Fabrizio was there and I had to push and make good lap times," said Spies. Spies Press Conferance Small WSB Donington.jpg

"When I saw Max was there, he arrived quite quick and I had to start braking very late and stopping almost in the middle of the corner to get good drive so he couldn't come by me.

"The first race obviously wasn't so good but we rallied together for the second race. That pass attempt was not the best move in the world, but that's how racing goes sometimes."

Haga managed to cross the line sixth this time, clawing back a few more points to keep a lead of just seven points ahead of Spies in the championship.
