Home for a Wedding
It's 2.45 am. I hear the slam of the back door and then the sound of taps being turned on in the kitchen followed by the rush of water. Light switches are pressed. Doors slam. There is the tinkle of a text. The microwave hums and pings. Then someone is thundering up the stairs and throwing open the bedroom door flooding the room with light...
No it's not intruders. It's Son No One who has come home from University for his best friend's wedding. The first in his circle of friends from school to get married. He's had such a fantastic time he wakes us all up to tell us all about it. How good the speeches were, how fit the bridesmaids (when I could get a word in I managed to find out they were wearing purple), how everyone teased his friend who turned up without a tie. (Even though most of his mates took off their ties at the earliest opportunity). He even enjoyed singing 'All Things Bright and Beautiful' in the church along with a lot of friends from his ex sixth form. Best day ever he says, it's ages since we've had any weddings in the family and he reckons he could go to one every week.
Next morning he finally emerges, dark circles under his eyes but still smiling, with a glass of water in each hand. As he begins to update his Facebook site with numerous wedding photos I ask him why he's still dressed in the same clothes he went to the wedding in ie. smart dark suit with blue shirt minus matching tie. (Hope his flat mate who lent him the said suit isn't reading this). Must have fallen asleep he says. On top of the quilt and looking up at the poster on his ceiling which says 'I think I'll just lie here for the rest of my life.'
Unfortunately it's soon time once more for him to gather up his odd socks from the back of the airing cupboard and his clean washing and head back to his student life...
