I'm a PC - Pretty Confused.
I'm a PC and I'm a..."
This advert has been on the telly for a few weeks, and to be honest, I haven't a clue what it is about. Maybe it should read:
"Am I a PC? And I'm a..."
There are many adverts I don't understand and many more that are so irritating I keep a fork handy to stab my leg with until they are over, but I spotted Mr Bill Gates in this one, linked him with PC, and being curious, investigated further.
If you Google "I'm a PC," you'll find a dedicated website. Below is a quote from the homepage:
"ARE YOU A PC?
BE IT. SAY IT. WEAR IT.
Roll webcam. Cue microphone. You're on in five. Sure, there are a billion PCs out there, but we want your own unique story. Show the world what kind of PC you are. And while you're at it, check out the new I'M A PC Store. Find ties, shirts, hats, mousepads and mugs for every PC on your list."
What on earth is Bill on about? Perhaps it will all become clear if I copy the people in the advert by stating my PC status and occupation. Here goes:
"I may or may not be a PC, because I'm a thicko and haven't a clue what it means. Your web site didn't help either and I'm on the dole"...Hmm... perhaps not.
Or are we meant to insert our own meanings?
"ARE YOU A PC?"
Not if it means "Petty Criminal?" I presumed your website would have explained what it meant but it didn't, so I'm guessing.
"BE IT." Be what? "Politically Correct?" I can't be politically correct because I'd have to kill myself for being a hypocrite.
"SAY IT." Ok, "Pedestrian Crossing" Well, I'm a Newcastle supporter and both have black and white stripes.
"WEAR IT." Then it must be "Personal Clothing." Now it's beginning to make sense. He's after my money. I can "WEAR IT" if I go to his store and purchase a tie a shirt or a hat.
"Roll webcam. Cue microphone etc."
I haven't registered my details on the website, so I don't know how much information is being requested, and I'm sometimes a bit slow on the uptake, but is Bill suggesting people film themselves and tell him their personal details so he can build a database of potential mugs... er, sorry customers? Is this called Phishing?
"...check out the new I'M A PC Store. Find ties, shirts, hats, mousepads and mugs for every PC on your list."
What list? Presumably I'm to make a list of PCs and buy them all a new outfit and a selection of accessories for their computers? Maybe it should read:
"We've discovered a mug to buy our ties, shirts, hats, mousepads and PCs for everyone on his list?"
I wonder if it means the obvious - "Personal Computer?" Highly unlikely, because ironically, if you take the P out of I'm a PC you get iMac.

Re Ray Lewis on 'I'm a PC'
Took a while to get there Ray, but a great idea.
Finishing up with iMac is great, As a Mac user, it really
is a daft campaign. Why would anyone buy a PC and spend the rest of here life removing trojans and virus.
Mac leads the way and if PC means personal computer, why not get a Mac it's a 'PC' too...but better.Mich better.
All people ned to do is go to the Apple site and watch the ads.
Good on ya!
