Recycling your bike made easier

By Trash Talk on Dec 17, 08 11:20 AM

Premier Waste Management is operating two drop-off points for unwanted bicycles, bike parts and accessories.

Premier Waste Management has teamed up with Recyke y' Bike in Newcastle and Sports Recycler, in South Shields: two organisations that can breath new life into unwanted bicycles and bike bits.

We need any and every type of bicycle from mountain bikes to kid's three wheelers, broken bikes, bike parts and accessories.

WHAT HAPPENS TO THE BIKES AND PARTS
The mechanics and volunteers at Recyke y' Bike and Sports Recycler repair the bikes back into working order.

The mechanics at the scheme can make use of any bike parts and accessories to rebuild a damaged bike or even build one from scratch. Wheels, frames, pedals, tyres and inner tubes, saddles, bike accessories, lights, bike chains - they are all useful. Even a broken wheel can yield some spokes to help rebuild a bike.

Once restored the bikes are sold on here in the North East at an affordable price, donated to local families, or used in activities for the good of the community.

Some of the damaged bikes are donated to a scheme which ships them out to West and South Africa. They are then repaired by local workshops. The African scheme provides vital support to health projects, providing doctors, nurses and midwives with bikes to reach otherwise inaccessible villages in some of the poorest countries in the World. The same scheme donates children's bikes to Afghanistan.

The emphasis of the scheme is making use of the bikes and parts Any metal left over or that cannot be used will be sold as scrap. Metal is infinitely recyclable and this scrap will go onto make new metal and could even find itself being made into a brand new bike.
