All I want to say about Celebrity Big Brother...

Boffins have worked out that soap characters are drunks. A month-long study into drinking habits in Emmerdale showed the equivalent of eight pints of beer and a measure of spirits were consumed in an average episode.

So what! The whole point is soaps is to dramatise the extreme behaviour of the characters. That's why they have more affairs, over-the-top reactions to everyday trails and tribulations and, yes, Mr Boffin from Derby University, that's why they drink at lot.

Fans of Blackadder will be top-hole, sir, with a ying and yang and yippiedeedoo.
That's because Rowan Atkinson has finally decided to take part in a documentary celebrating 25 years of the comedy show.
Previous attempts earlier in the year were fine but there was something missing.
And that was Atkinson's own comments on the comedy phenemenon.
But the BBC had a cunning plan and managed to get the famously-private star to recall the success and failures (and there were some failures, remember the first series - there's a reason it's not often repeated).
Blackadder Rides Again is on BBC1, Christmas Day, 10.30pm if you want to watch or record it.

Blogging - what's in a name?

When I first began writing this blog over a year ago I thought the idea of calling it "Howay Five-0" was rather clever.

Too clever, as it turned out, because quite a few people had no idea what the title alluded to.

You have to be of a certain age to be familiar with the TV cop series Hawaii Five-O. And you have to be from a certain geographic location to know that "Howay" means "come on".

Death Toll Rises in Orkney

By Ray Lewis on Dec 11, 08 03:15 PM

Balfour hospital in Kirkwall, on the islands of Orkney - just above Scotland, doesn't make the news very often, but it made Sky News this week because Iain White works there.

Designer Nadine Jarvis has proposed a recycling and memorial solution to any dead relatives or dead pets.
She makes pencils out of dead people.

Our annual foray into decorating our house (and garden) for Christmas began last weekend when my other half sent me and Son No. Two to B & Q for 2 metres of chicken wire for the palm tree...
