The National Glass Centre

Posted by Arlene Pearson on June 22, 2008 9:31 PM |

Apologies if this blog is turning into a social column. I know it’s supposed to be about everyday life but I’ve been to some really good events lately and a retirement party last Sunday evening at the National Glass Centre in Sunderland was no exception…

A modern building of glass and steel located on the banks of the River Wear, the
National Glass Centre features stunning views across the water and out to sea.

You can book a One to One Hot Glass Blowing session, watch the glassmakers at work, go on a tour, or browse exhibitions showing artworks from contemporary artists. You can even hire ‘The Pod’ complete with spectacular view for your wedding ceremony or business function or attend a Summer Pudding demonstration.

For the time being however we were happy to be greeted by friendly staff in reception with champagne, freshly squeezed orange juice and nibbles.

We looked down from the Mezzanine Gallery at the ‘ThrowingStones’ restaurant below whilst up above our heads, some very brave people actually lay face down on the glass roof directly above and waved down at us…

It was an extremely warm evening and I heard someone say, ‘Can you believe it, all this glass and not a window in sight…’

However once we moved down to the ‘ThrowingStones’ restaurant/function room the doors were opened onto the terrace and we were able to promenade up and gaze back in at the party.

After a delicious buffet, we were entertained by the fantastic Jason Isaacs a charismatic swing singer who was just perfect for the occasion. Jason also plays jazz saxophone and at larger functions sings with a twelve or seventeen piece band. As well as performing at many sell out concerts in Newcastle, he appears regularly in Vegas and all over the world.

We were intrigued by the wonderful smell of baking cookies which apparently were for sale in the shop the next day. Interesting when it mingled with the slightly fishy tang of seaweed streaming in from the river…

Before we left we dared to wander onto the glass roof at midnight, looking down at the partygoers below and at the lights across the water. Hard to believe we weren’t abroad…

Can’t wait for the next occasion…
