Thunderbirds are go

By Booze Blog on Mar 12, 08 05:33 PM

I am a man of simple tastes who does not demand too much of life.

I don't do drugs, I don't get into punch ups, I don't sneer at people as I trudge down the street, I don't break into cars, burgle houses or mug old ladies.

I've worked for 20 odd years and paid my taxes Yet today I think why bother? Because me, and people like me, seem to be paying the price for a binge drinking culture that is fuelling crime on the street.

At the end of a working day I like a glass of wine or two to unwind, like many people. But I'm now being priced out of this simple pleasure because the duty on alcohol - not just wine, but beer and spirits too - is such a soft target when it comes to budget time.

Today - Wednesday - was no different as Brown's invertebrate pal in the Exchequer upped the price of wine by about 14p a bottle. Thanks for that Darling.

It's been put up for the good us of all. If the price is too high people don't drink, is the thinking.

Sorry Darling, but it doesn't work like that. If the price is too high in one place, you go somewhere else, or try something new.

For me, that means re-acquainting myself with a bottle of Thunderbird.

See you on the other side.
