The Book Group
The Book Group I belong to is a group with a difference.
When we met to review Zorba the Greek we had a full scale Greek evening with traditional Moussaka, Greek salad and Ouzo me Meze. We forgot about the Greek background music, however, someone did bring along the Grease soundtrack instead...
When we reviewed Peter Kay's book, The Sound of Laughter, we pretended we were at The Phoenix Club and had a pub quiz complete with twiglets, peanuts and sausage rolls.
Our Book Group began its life as Boskoops Book Group but due to building works in Eldon Square, the meetings have taken place in a variety of city centre locations.
Anywhere that was big enough for us to move tables around so we could all sit together and debate well on into the evening... Somewhere that didn't mind the sound of lively discussion and raucous laughter...
We have a select group of members with ages ranging from seventeen through to eighty and a diverse mix of personalities. The books chosen for discussion may not always be what I would choose to read myself but this is definitely an advantage. It broadens horizons and introduces a wide variety of different authors into the mix.
We read and review one book a month. Everyone has a chance to choose a book and so far books read and reviewed include: The Alchemist, James and the Giant Peach and Wicked. Up for review next time is Hot Six, a crime novel by Janet Evanovitch.
We also discuss plays and films and are planning trips to Live Theatre and the Tyneside Cinema
It's not just a Book Group but a real social occasion. We debate everything, one of our favourite topics at the moment being the escapades of our group organiser when he took part in a certain reality TV programme which shall remain nameless...okay then, it's Come Dine With Me.
One person said it's the most enjoyable night out in the month and as someone who has always had a passion for words, I'm inclined to agree...

Recommend Stuart Maconie's Pies and Prejudice. Good read and the catering is obvious but who's pies would you vote for?

I will recommend this one to the Group next time. I'll ask them about the pies as well. Is this the music journalist that was worried he'd become a southerner because his kitchen had a coffee machine and sun dried tomatoes?
