Chunky Funky
Having had curly hair all my life, I wasn't too sure when Son No. 2 wanted to straighten it. 'No-one has big hair any more.' he insisted.
I was instructed to sit still on his bed amongst the detritus of unfinished homework, music sheets and empty crisp packets without tidying up (which was difficult) whilst he powered up his brand new digital hair straighteners.
With 'Funeral for a Friend' blaring in my ears he whipped out the Chunky Funky and applied large globules to my head until the numbers on the dial reached a scorching 200...
It took him about five seconds to transform my naturally curly big hair into a straight, sharp, razored, choppy style.
'It's well good' he said admiring his work and asphyxiating me with Shock Rock hairspray.
I wasn't convinced until several people walked past me at work and passed comments like: 'You look ten years younger' and 'Is your son a hairdresser?' 'No,' I replied to the latter. 'Well he should be.' was the reply.
He is a creative type but was quite horrified when I told him. Headphones on, keyboard plugged in, guitar strapped on his shoulder with 'Hot Chip' music blaring he moodily gave me a pair of his old straighteners to practice with.
I still believe there's a creative hairstylist struggling to break through because I heard him saying to his gran he'd love to have a go at straightening her hair...
Now where did he put that Wonder Gum hair wax?

My sister's stylist in Leeds always says to her 'I think we'll go choppy' as if he's never suggested it before. The expression is in the annals of our family history now. You must trust your son, Arlene to let him loose on you like that.
