What's all this ear?

By Ken Oxley on Dec 19, 07 03:25 PM in

My ears are the wrong shape. I'd aways wondered about them, but there had never been a conclusive diagnosis until now.

It was my 19-year-old son who broke the news on his return from university for the Christmas break.

Not that Sam is studying medicine. . . he's on a film production course. But that didn't stop him giving me his professional opinion.

It all came about because he couldn't wait to show me his new iPod and, despite my mild phobia of gadgets, I had to admit it was a nifty little device.

The only problem is, I can't get to the end of a song because the tiny speakers just won't stay attached to my ears.

"iPods fit everyone. . . you must be doing something wrong," Sam Insisted. Then, on closer inspection, he announced that I was apparently a freak of nature . . . a person with iPod-resistant lugs.

I did worry about this. But after some considerable research I've discovered I'm not alone. The problem - like most of my problems these days - is more than likely down to my age.

Had the iPod been around when I was a lad, my Britney Spears would have accommodated the mini speakers just fine.

But ears, like noses, continue to grow throughout our lives. . . which is a worrying thought, especially as it would appear my ears outgrew the iPod long before it was invented.

If they keep expanding at this rate, I'll be like Dumbo. Perhaps those clever boffins at Apple could develop an iPod for oldies. . . with speakers the size of footballs.
