You just can't find decent criminals anymore

It seems as though standards are slipping in all areas of life. Once upon a time cabinet ministers who were even slightly implicated in the whiff of a drugs scandal would have the decency to resign their post, issue a public apology and content themselves with a backbench role.

Now the buggers are queuing up to admit they once smoked dope at university. And it’s not just the ruling classes which are letting standards slip. The criminals are letting the side down too……

Back in the 40s when we were fighting off the Nazi threat some of our most notorious criminals rallied to the national cause to help fight fascism.

A prime example being Scotsman John Ramensky’s who used his prowess as a safe-cracker to join the Commandos and steal secret plans after being dropped behind enemy lines and breaking into the safes of Rommel and Goering.

He may have been criminal scum but at least Ramensky could carry out a job properly. The same can’t be said for those inside HMP Frankland Durham.

The prison has the capacity to house 734 high risk prisoners – some of the nastiest pieces of work in society including murderers, rapists, armed robbers and people for whom violence is their favoured past time.

Yet here we are in the middle of the war on terror and not one of those could actually finish off Al-Qaeda terrorist Dhiren Barot.

This is a man who wanted to take explosives into the heart of the London tube network and blow a hole large enough in the tunnels that the Thames would flood the system killing countless thousands and crippling our capital.

While Al-Qaeda extremists in Iraq manage to capture British subjects and behead them live on camera the best the worst of British criminality can do is to scald someone with boiling water so he ha to spend five days in NHS hospital in a private room under armed guard.

They’re just not trying are they! Perhaps the MRSA will succeed where the inmates of HMP Frankland failed.
